31. Jan. 2014 - via Guardian  Ukrainian protester says he was kidnapped and tortured

"Missing opposition activist Dmytro Bulatov found bruised and cut outside Kiev, reportedly with hands bearing crucifixion marks"

"We welcome the beginning of dialogue between the President and the opposition. We call for this dialogue to be sustainable, inclusive and grounded on the full respect of international human rights treaties ratified by Ukraine and political commitments made through the Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review, last March.

https://twitter.com/UNrightswire/status/429275607495876608
We also welcome the abolition by the Ukrainian parliament earlier this week of the laws passed on January 16, which unnecessarily restricted the exercise of the rights to freedom of assembly, association and speech, as well as the operation of NGOs. We call upon the President of Ukraine to sign the new law abolishing the legislative package of January 16.

However we are appalled by the deaths reported in recent days in Kiev, which should be promptly, thoroughly and independently investigated. We are also calling for an investigation into reports of kidnappings and torture.

We reiterate our call to the Government and protesters to exercise restraint and create conditions for dialogue and reconciliation. International human rights norms and Ukraine's compliance with these standards and its obligations pertaining to human rights must be at the centre of any future solutions and reconciliation processes"

Update 03. Feb. 2014

Journalists` resistance in Ukraine: protests against censorship, dictatorship and mass beating: infographics - Journalists in almost all regions of Ukraine have risen to protest against the «dictatorial laws» and mass beatings of their colleagues. This is the result of a research carried out by the Institute of Mass Information together with Centre UA. Specifically, in 20 of the 24 regions, journalists carried out rallies, urging colleagues from other regions to join them. Since January 17, journalists held 17 pickets of local governments, which were attended by over a thousand journalists across the country.

31.01.2014 - Human Rights Watch - Twitter

31.01.2014 - Human Rights Watch: Ukraine: Police Attacked Dozens of Journalists, Medics

"Ukrainian police assaulted and injured dozens of journalists and medical workers while trying to disperse street fighters and protesters in Kiev from January 19 to 22, 2014. Ukraines international partners should press Ukraine to investigate serious human rights violations and prosecute those responsible in accordance with international due process standards.

During its ongoing investigation of the government response to protests in Kiev, Human Rights Watch documented 13 cases in which the police beat journalists or medical workers, shot them with rubber bullets, or injured them with stun grenades. Ukrainian nongovernmental groups documented more than 60 such cases. Available evidence suggests that in many cases police deliberately targeted journalists and medics who were not participating in the protests."

Attacks on Journalists

"A list of attacked and injured journalists maintained by the Institute of Mass Information, a Ukrainian group, contains 60 names. Forty-eight of the journalists listed were injured or attacked in Kiev, and the rest in other cities, including Cherkasy, Dnepropetrovsk, and Zaporozhye. The majority work for Ukrainian media outlets, three are Russian, another three are Belarusian, and one is described as an unidentified foreign journalist. The actual number of attacked journalists could be higher, as Human Rights Watch documented several cases not included in the list.

According to the Institute of Mass Information, 22 journalists were hit, many of them injured, by stun grenades shrapnel; 21 were shot with rubber bullets; 9 were beaten by the police, and another 6 by alleged pro-government thugs; and 7 were detained. Some were attacked more than once. The lists said that one journalist was hit by a rock thrown by protesters."

via Media.am  "Euromaidan: Police Officers Shoot at Journalist"

"There are opinions that police officers are intentionally "neutralizing" journalists covering the Euromaidan.

Those are not opinions, but the truth. Striking evidence of this is the actions of the police. It's enough to watch the videos of attacks by the special police unit Berkut to be convinced that police officers aim and shoot at journalists and people with video cameras and tablets. There's only one goal: to neutralize journalists, to block coverage, and prevent the broadcast of information.
Many testify to the fact that police officers not only use physical violence, but also discredit and insult journalists in every way possible."
